Understanding Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition characterized by the loss of pigmentation, resulting in white or pale patches appearing on various parts of the body. This happens when melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin (the pigment that gives skin, hair, and eyes their color), stop functioning or are destroyed.

While vitiligo is not life-threatening or contagious, it can significantly impact an individual’s self-esteem and emotional well-being. It can affect people of all skin types but may be more noticeable in individuals with darker skin tones.

Causes of Vitiligo

The exact cause of vitiligo remains unknown, but researchers believe that several factors may contribute to its onset.

  • Autoimmune Response: The most widely accepted theory is that vitiligo is an autoimmune condition. The immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys melanocytes, leading to depigmented patches.

  • Genetic Predisposition: A family history of vitiligo or other autoimmune diseases can increase the risk of developing the condition. Approximately 20% of people with vitiligo have a close relative who also has it.
  • Environmental Factors: Certain external factors like severe sunburn, exposure to harmful chemicals, or extreme stress may trigger or accelerate the condition in individuals predisposed to it.

  • Oxidative Stress: Imbalances in the body’s antioxidant system can lead to oxidative stress, which damages melanocytes.
